Job Hunting and Self Worth

Here is what I am dealing with. In the job search it is easy to believe that you really have nothing to offer and that you should just give up. The way we are treated by a majority of companies is just wrong. We spend so much time working on our resume and cover letter, only to be scanned out by a freaking computer. It is embarrassing, sad and just plain wrong.

Here is what I have learned.

We are still worth it, there is a company and a job out there that is meant for us, but we will never find it if we hide behind a computer all day. We need to be proactive in what we are doing and always remember the value that we bring to the table.

I need to get clear not only on the type of job that you want but also at the type of company that you want. You need to have a clear understanding of what that company looks like in size, its values and the industry it is in.

It is hard but stop just focusing on the traditional approach. You need to figure out a way to stand out. Here are some ideas that I have gotten or come up with this past week
  • Create a list of target companies you want to work for and reach out to people in the department you want to work in. You need to show that you can add value and do not do a hard sell on them right way. Tell them that you really love their company and you want to learn more about it.
  • Start reaching out to Founders directly. You could try to apply the traditional way, but it will not work as well. Founders love people that reach out to them and have a passion to work in their business. Show that you have passion, drive and that you bring results
  • Follow up is the name of the game. You need to follow up constantly. Be proactive and when you follow up show your value and help.

On a personal level, I have worked on scheduling out my days. While I have not stuck to the schedule completely, it is super helpful to have an understanding of what I should be working on. I have also found that I need to just follow my schedule and control my brain. When I can provide control of what my brain should be focusing on, I achieve a lot more.

Again, the importance of people can never be stressed enough. Though out this journey I have been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by some of the most amazing, talented and caring people in the world. They are constantly there to help me get back up, provide advice or just listen when I need it.

Spending time on LinkedIn can be a scary and demoralizing place. It is easy to believe you are less worthy than everyone else when you read the roles people come up with. Sadly, LinkedIn has become a lot like high school. People are just trying to be the most popular and prove that they are significant to people that honestly do not even matter. We embellish what we have accomplished so we stan out more, create a better sounding job title so we sound more important, upload vides of us in an expensive rented care to prove that we made it and constantly post and argue with people to show how smart we are.  Just a reminder, you are worthy and no one that really matters in your life will ever refer to you by your job title. Focus on doing great work, helping people and being ambitious and the rest will take care of itself.

Want to help? Thank you. Right now I am looking to network and connect with leaders in the areas of marketing, strategy and branding. If you know of anyone I should know of, feel free to reach out to me with an email.
